AVID offerings featured at West Middle School's 'Family Information Night' Jan. 9 Dec. 18, 2018West Middle School will host a “Family Information Night” Wednesday, Jan. 9 for future sixth-grade students and their families. The get-together will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the school, 1920 W. Pikes Peak Ave. According to Principal Shalah Sims, the public school for grades 6-8 will highlight its first-year AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) educational focus.
One particular goal is to boost students who might become “first- generation college students in their families,” Sims pointed out. Also featured for the event will be West's Gifted Magnet Program (formerly called SAIL), which “provides rigorous, engaging, interdisciplinary and thematic instruction specific to the needs of gifted students,” a press release states. (A separate information night for the gifted program will be Jan. 15 at the school, from 6 to 7 p.m.) The main activities Jan. 9 will be in the school gym, where about 20 tables will be set up - each one providing details about an aspect of West and/or its connection to the community, Sims added. About 285 students attend West. The school shares a building with West Elementary (grades K-5). For more information, call West Middle School at 328-3900.
