Meet a Westsider:
Gary Hassig
Profession/Occupation... Drummer/ percussionist, full-time drum teacher and free-lance writer. What I like most about the Westside is... the realness of the people, the old houses, the rock formations everywhere – even some in people’s backyards. If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... less traffic. When I moved down here from Denver 13 years ago, the traffic, to me, was almost non-existent. Now it’s congested. A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Benny & Joon,” (for the umpteenth time.) The worst advice I’ve ever gotten was... meditation isn’t for Christians. I am now finding out that it is a very rich and vital part of the Christian tradition. It goes all the way back to the early church. If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... (living today) Garrison Keillor; (historical) Jesus, Meister Eckhart (Christian mystic in the 14th century), Mark Twain. The next time I travel, I’m going to... Cancun, Mexico, in December - I can’t wait! My favorite childhood memory is... hanging around my dad’s country store north of Denver, Sunday drives with my family and riding horses in the fields and mountains. My favorite fall pastime is... hiking through the fallen leaves in an aspen grove, and outdoor drum circles. Something good I’ve read is.. “Leaping,” by Brian Doyle; “God in the Alley,” by Greg Paul. My pet peeve is... poor planning by bureacrats for water and traffic. I’m a fourth-generation Colorado native and I don’t want to discourage anyone moving here, but it is being overdeveloped with no thought of where the water will come from or what to do about traffic. Another pet peeve (on a smaller scale) is dog droppings on hiking trails. If I won the lottery, I’d... I’ve never played the lottery in my life, but if it happened, I would give money to charity, buy my wife a big house in the mountains with a porch all the way around, record some of my songs and buy a 1952 Chevy and fix it up. Meet a Westsider” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you would like to be a Meet-a-Westsider (or know someone who should be), please give us a call at 471-6776. |
