Meet a Westsider:
Ann Brooks
Profession/Occupation...
I’m a retired teacher.
What I like most about the Westside is... I’ve always loved the Westside. We first lived in the canyon when we moved here. Then moved on the Mesa in 1969 because we had another baby on the way. It’s comfortable here; the people are nice to get along with. I like the post office, the shops in Old Colorado City and I like the fact that it’s near town. And I love the view! If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... I don’t want Highway 24 to change the Westside dramatically. I wonder where they came up with their projected figures? Also, I like to see better planning and more sensitive in-fill building. A good movie I’ve seen recently is... I watch a lot of old movies on TCM (Turner Classics). I also enjoyed, “Little Miss Sunshine.” It was a good film about a supportive though dysfunctional family. It was also positive and funny. The worst advice I’ve ever gotten was... My hair got grey very early (35) so when I was about 50, I decided to color it. I started dying it blonde and then a friend advised me to go darker and I did. I don’t know why I listened! It didn’t look good. If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Eleanor Roosevelt. I thought she was a wonderful woman. Very strong, intelligent. She cared about human suffering and did what she could to alleviate it. And I think she influenced her husband on a lot of choices that were made for the good of the people. The next time I travel, I’m going to... I’d really like to go to Italy on an Elderhostel trip. My favorite childhood memory is... going to visit my grandparents on both sides. One pair lived in the country and the other in the city. They were just good to me. They were so different. My city grandmother enjoyed going to the movies with me and telling fascinating stories. Both my grandmothers were great cooks and they allowed me to do a lot of exploring on my own. I had elaborate discussions about faith and religion with my country grandfather and spent time “observing” with my city grandfather. My favorite fall pastime is... walking and seeing all the leaves changing. Something good I’ve read is.. I’m part of a book club group and we just read and discussed, “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” by Audrey Niffenegger. It’s about time-traveling in modern times. My pet peeve is... I don’t like to get phone calls that aren’t from friends. I’d like to know what that phone number is that puts you on the “no call” list. I once was on that list and wonder what happened. If I won the lottery, I’d... Take all of my family on a trip! And give to a lot of my favorite charities. Meet a Westsider” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you would like to be a Meet-a-Westsider (or know someone who should be), please give us a call at 471-6776. |
