Students to cook for parade Pancake Breakfast
For the third straight year Saturday, Oct 5, the Pancake Breakfast in Bancroft Park will raise money for the Coronado High Homecom-ing Parade that same morning.
This year will be a little different, though. When the food starts being served at 7:30 a.m., it will be students doing the cooking and serving, not teachers and staff with the PTA, as in the first two years. The students, about 20 in all, will be from the Coronado catering class taught by Christina DeCrescentis. The price of the meal will be the same as it has been - $5 for pancakes and a beverage. The parade itself starts at 9 a.m. (See story, Page 1.) For DeCrescentis' students, the participation will help them earn college credits from Pikes Peak Community College. In addition, “it will be a good opportunity for them to get out in the community and learn life skills about working with customers,” she said. The catering program will also receive a share of the earnings from the breakfast, although Coronado Assis-tant Principal Darin Smith said the parade should still get a large enough share to continue its tradition. The pancake fundraiser was started in 2011 because tighter city regulations over the preceding several years had led to roughly doubled parade costs. Westside Pioneer article |
