Update: Founders Day
The Old Colorado City Historical Society (OCCHS) has changed a speaker from the advertised schedule for its annual Founders Day event Aug. 12 in Bancroft Park.
At 2 p.m. in the Garvin Cabin, Eugene Red Hawk (Orner) will introduce Austin Box, a senior Ute elder, to discuss the Ute Indians who had lived in the Pikes Peak region before the settlers came. The OCCHS' original schedule had stated that Orner would give a presentation on the Utes. This was the result of a miscommunication, according to OCCHS President Sharon Swint. Orner explained this week that it would not have been appropriate for him to talk about the Utes because he himself is a Mohawk . Free and open to the public, Founders Day celebrates the start of the original Colorado City in 1859. Also featuring live music, a crafts fair and other historical presentations, the event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Westside Pioneer article |
