Joe Mauro (center) of Pueblo sells some onions at the opening day of the Westside Farmers Market June 5. Mauro is with Vic Mauro Produce,
owned by his son. Helping him is Conrad Theisman, 89, who said he’s been selling at the market since it opened in 1988. He said he got into the
business while living in St. Louis during the Depression in the 1930s. “I couldn’t get a job, so I started peddling fruit door to door,” he said. The
market is open Saturdays from 7 a.m. to about 1:30 p.m. on 24th Street next to Bancroft Park.
