What do you do?
Nancy Jang
Where do you work and what is your title? I am the partner/manager of Sakura Sushi & Grill. What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for? I manage pretty much everything from cashier to the kitchen. I order supplies, food, and I also do the bookkeeping. How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside? This is my first restaurant. I have worked as a waitress but before this, I was contract manager for our own cleaning company. I still do contract work at the Academy. What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)? Meeting people and getting to know them. This is a natural for me. We have a family atmosphere here and I enjoy meeting a variety of different people. If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be? I would like to do some more decorating and have a Dadami style dining room. It’s a more traditional Japanese style of sitting arrangement (with a little twist). What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for? Sometimes dealing with the more challenging customer is harder than anything. I’m surprised because I have had training in customer service/sales. Even though I am used to dealing with people, a few (actually only two) couldn’t understand the difference between Japanese and oriental foods. Overall, everyone is very nice and supportive. I also had to pass a “sushi rice” test. It’s where I had to cook up three batches of rice with just the right ph balance and take them all the way up to Fort Collins for testing in order to get a certificate to give to the health department. I passed the test! What makes working on the Westside special? It’s different than any other place. It’s more funky. There’s a lot of mix. The people are proud of what is here, the historic buildings and history. They are more open-minded and have a freer spirit. There are also a lot of events. It’s alive! “What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776. |
