Meet a Westsider:
Irma Kristel

Profession/Occupation... I work for Cactus Flower Tropical as an interior plantscape specialist and I have my own business growing and selling organic plants and vegetables.

What I like most about the Westside is... Where else in town can a serious gardener have several compost bins and a pile of manure without violating a few covenants?

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... There’s not much I would change. I have always loved the Westside. I’ve been here since 1984.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Food Inc.” It’s not for everyone. It shows the dark side of how our food is mass produced and how the big businesses devour the small farmers, the slaughterhouses, etc.

I'd like to discover... my own new tomato hybrid. It would take years, probably. Something extra sweet that grows well here.

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... an honest politician. That will never happen.

The next time I travel, I’m going to... Canyon Lands in Utah. I got a postcard from Bryce Canyon the other day. It’s got to be one of the most beautiful spots on earth, and it’s so close.

My favorite childhood memory is... coming home from school with two ducks in tow. I got to keep them.

My favorite winter pastime is... working in my greenhouse when it’s cold and snowy, planting seeds when it’s snowing.

Something good I’ve read is... Michael Pollen’s “Botany of Desire.” You have to be a plant person to appreciate it.

My pet peeve is... people who can’t get in the habit of recycling. Is it laziness or what? Don’t get me started.

If I didn't have to work for a year I would... be working in my garden.

Meet a Westsider” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you would like to be a Meet-a-Westsider (or know someone who should be), please give us a call at 471-6776.
