Meet a Westsider:
Mary Baker

Profession/Occupation... Volunteer “for hire,” including dog-walking and house-watching.

What I like most about the Westside is... the people, the mountains, the animals and the sky.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... that people of all colors, faiths (or none), occupations, ages and economic status would leave their boxes (houses, computers, TVs, etc.) so they could meet their neighbors face to face and offer each other help (if they need it).

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” and “Westward the Women.”

I'd like to discover... gold in them thar hills! Kidding – I would like to discover more good humor in myself and others.

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... actors Yul Brynner, Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington, Mel Gibson and Clint Eastwood; actresses Liz Tayor and Angelina Jolie; singers Aretha Franklin and Lady Gaga; activist Malala (a Pakistani schoolgirl who stood up to the Taliban); politicians President Donald Trump, Tom Tancredo, Nikki Haley and Condoleeza Rice; and religious leaders Jesus, Buddha, Krishna and Moses.

The next time I travel, I’m going... Florida, to visit my mother and half of my siblings (I’m the oldest of nine).

My favorite childhood memory is... Doing shows for and with my siblings. Lots of singing and dancing. Swimming off the USO beach in Long Branch, New Jersey.

My favorite winter pastime is... being present for everyone I meet. I love Christmas and Thanksgiving time. To “be” present – yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery – today is a gift. That’s why they call it the present.

Something good I’ve read is... “The Presence Process,” by Michael Brown.

My pet peeve is... I have two. 1. Hypocrisy about the law – we will never have peace and harmony unless we all follow the same laws. 2. Doing for others what they are capable of doing for themselves.

If I didn’t have to work for a year... I love to work. I work for myself and family. In other words, I love working and sharing the fruits of my labor, whatever the labor is that I am capable of in a given moment.

Meet a Westsider” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you would like to be a Meet-a-Westsider (or know someone who should be), please give us a call at 471-6776.
