Guardian Angels on Jan. 13 OWN agenda
Representatives of the Guardian Angels are slated to speak at the Jan. 13 meeting of the Organization of Westside Neighbors
The meeting, which includes election of new OWN board members, will begin at 7 p.m. in the West Center, 25 N. 20th St.
Recognized by the red berets its members wear, the Guardian Angels are a private, weapon-free organization operating in numerous cities with the goal of helping ensure safe streets and neighborhoods. The group has an office in Denver and, at the invitation of merchants, has been providing safety patrols on East Platte Avenue in Colorado Springs in recent years.
Sallie Clark, an OWN member and county commissioner-elect, said she talked to the Angels about coming to an OWN meeting after hearing about possible crime issues on the Westside, including the area of the Red Rock Shopping Center.
“The police can't be everywhere,” she said, adding her impression that the Guardian Angels have been good for the East Platte area.
Another OWN member, Kristine Van Wert, said she thinks the Guardian Angels potentially can provide a crime-prevention element that the police often cannot, because they are so busy responding after crimes occur.
