Douglas Creek emergency fixes to start

Emergency repairs may begin this month on the Douglas Creek drainage channel between Centennial Boulevard and Garden of the Gods Road.
Steve Jacobsen, a senior civil engineer for the Stormwater Enterprise, said this week that Frazee Construc-tion, a pre-qualified contractor with the city, has been selected to do the work.
He wasn't sure yet if Frazee would get going this month or after Jan. 1.
Once under way, the estimated $250,000 project is expected to take about three months, depending on the weather. “The whole idea is to get in and out before the spring rain, and that shouldn't be a problem,” he said.
The project has been planned to address four particularly bad areas, if the contractor's costs aren't too high. In these areas, the concrete lining is “missing in its entirety or has been undermined and is subject to collapse,” Jacobsen said.
The emergency work is part of $3.8 million the Enterprise has budgeted toward that part of Douglas Creek through 2011. The Enterprise is also continuing to work on long-range drainage proposals.
Public meetings on a draft master plan are likely to be scheduled in the first part of 2009, he said, with the resulting improvements to be constructed between 2009 and 2011.
