Westside boy walking to school reportedly escapes man who demanded his backpack

The police were called one recent morning after a Holmes Middle School student reported that a man tried to steal his backpack.
The incident occurred on 19th Street south of King Street while the boy was walking to school.
According to information provided to the Westside Pioneer by the boy's grandfather, the man came out of some bushes and demanded the backpack.
Instead, the boy took off running and made it safely home… with the backpack.
Police investigated, but found no one.
The boy described the would-be robber as scruffy and of his parents' age or older.
