Meet a Westsider:
Mike Mazzola

Profession/Occupation... I own Mountain Equipment Recyclers south of downtown. We sell new and used outdoor gear. We also have a greater cause, donating to local charities through our business model. We’ve given almost $40,000 to nonprofits since opening three years ago.

What I like most about the Westside is... the friendly people, proximity to amazing open spaces and great local small businesses. But most important, the friendly people!

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... It would be great to have a pedestrian bridge over Highway 24 at Ridge Road leading into Red Rock Canyon Open Space.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “The Butler,” with Forest Whitaker and Oprah. Similar to Forrest Gump, it is a remarkable story that epitomizes the great American spirit and the will to overcome adversity.

I'd like to discover... new areas in the American West I have not visited.

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... I meet a lot of great people at my store every day. In three years, I’ve met great local citizens with amazing experiences and stories.

The next time I travel, I’m going... I go to Colorado’s San Juan Mountains any chance I get. I also want to visit the Pacific Northwest very soon.

My favorite childhood memory is... Growing up in rural Missouri was a great gift. I spent most days outdoors fishing, hunting and playing sports.

My favorite fall pastime is... enjoying the mountains of Colorado. September in the high country is my favorite time of year.

Something good I’ve read is... “Undaunted Courage,” by Stephen Ambrose. It’s a great book about the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

My pet peeve is... lack of humility.

If I didn’t have to work for a year, I would... paddle the length of the Missouri River following the Lewis and Clark Expedition and/or volunteer locally with the Trails and Open Space Coalition, Rocky Mountain Field Institute and Pikes Peak Community Foundation.
