Honoring our soldiers’ service

Shortly after the ceremonial lighting of Old Colorado City’s Honor Tree the night of Nov. 27, the Spring Singers of the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale (a few of whose members are shown at left) launch into holiday song. The event, sponsored by the Old Colorado City Associates (OCCA) merchants group, was new this year as an effort to recognize and support the area’s military in a time of war. Joining in the singing and spirit of the event on a bitterly cold night were about 50 well-bundled people (photo below). At far left is City Council member Jerry Heimlicher, who gave a short speech to kick off the lighting. Santa was also present – can you find him? Families of soldiers were asked to come to the event to put ornaments on the tree in their names. Among those doing so were Marion Patterson of northeastern Colorado Springs, who said she has a nephew with the British forces in Iraq, also knows some Fort Carson soldiers, and was glad to have the opportunity to show her support for their efforts.
