Fact check: Football history elusive
With two sons on the team and Coronado (his alma mater) making a rare run at state football glory, Assistant Principal Darin Smith has set aside time this fall to research key aspects of the school's gridiron history.
It hasn't been easy. He recently found that two facts he'd reported (and which were printed in the Westside Pioneer Nov. 7) were incorrect. One of these “facts,” on the face of it, should have been irrefutable because it is engraved on the trophy Coronado received for being state 3A football runner-up in 1982. It says that the state champion that year was Fruita. But it wasn't. The team Coronado lost to in the finals was Loveland. The second error was human - someone close to the team in 1990 failed to remember that the school had made the playoffs that year. Bottom line: Coronado had three (not two) playoff appearances before 2013. The other two (correctly stated previously) were 1982 and 1991. Westside Pioneer article |
