What do you do?
Where do you work and what is your title?
I am the administrative assistant at J.A. Kasten Accounting.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I answer phones, schedule appointments, do data entry, calculate sales and payroll taxes, run payrolls, and do general office “odd jobs.” I also assist in coordinating the annual Hal-loween Safe Treats event.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I have been doing office work on and off for 20 years and for the Kastens since 2004.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I love interacting with our clients! I enjoy the problem-solving and the satisfaction that follows completing a big project. I like being able to help people understand their finances just a little bit better (although the bulk of the credit has to go to Judy!)
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
There really isn’t anything I’d change about my job – I feel like part of the family here. Even when tax season gets overly stressful, there is always a client who makes us feel appreciated, and that makes the rough moments completely worth it.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
I never expected to get the off-the-wall questions, like “How do I report a stolen stop sign?” or “When does the farmer’s market open?”
What makes working on the Westside special?
The best part of the Westside is the small-town feel, and the fact that everyone looks out for each other. People here are quick to put aside their differences and to come together when something needs to be done or someone is in need. The community spirit is enviable on the Westside.
“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
