Welcome to the Westside?
This trash-strewn transient camp next to Fountain Creek is one of the first views nowadays for motorists on Cimarron Street coming to the Westside from the downtown or off I-25. The city’s once-monthly clean-up sweeps of such illegal camps by police and city-contracted beautification workers has been put on hold because of a threatened citizen lawsuit alleging violations of homeless people’s rights. On Oct. 23, Mayor Lionel Rivera said the sweeps would not resume until the City Attorney’s Office reviews city policy on the sweeps and confirms they are allowable under law. “It’s still all under evaluation,” city spokesperson Sue Blumberg said this week. “There is no time frame on it.”
