Meet a Westsider:
Patti Smithsonian

      Profession/Occupation... Puppeteer/art educator.

What I like most about the Westside is... The Westside is a friendly, old-fashioned kind of neighborhood. People sit on their front porches and say hello to their neighbors.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... It would be great to have a public gardens, like a smaller version of the Denver Botanical Gardens. I think that it would make a lot of people happier, calmer and saner.

A good movie I've seen recently is... Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev’s movie, “The Return.” It was a dream-like and mythic story of two brothers’ journey with their narcissistic father who had previously abandoned them. There was a special showing at UCCS and the film-maker was there.

I'd like to discover... a way to save animals from extinction. In modern times, it’s estimated at 10,000 species a year.

If I could meet someone famous, I'd like to meet... I would like to have a little dinner party with: Japanese composer Rychui Sakamoto, adventurer Sarah Marquis, author Salman Rushdie, Pope Francis, the Dali Lama, artist Suzi Gablik, author and filmmaker Miranda July and the Coatimundi puppeteers. President Obama would come separately because we really need to talk.

The next time I travel, I'm going to... Pueblo! It has interesting people and architecture, a vibrant art scene, good ethnic restaurants and the Sangre de Cristo Art Center is amazing! I love the Riverwalk at night.

My favorite childhood memory is... climbing trees to pick apples.

My favorite fall pastime is... seed saving. It’s a fascinating hobby. I also like to hike in any season and practically any weather.

Something good I've read is... Currently I’m reading “The Bone Clock,” by David Mitchell. It’s a really engaging story of different levels of reality. It is so well-written.

My pet peeve is... I try not to have peeves, but I guess I will say that I kind of freak out when people who are contagiously sick don’t stay home!

If I didn't have to work for a year, I'd… probably be doing the same things I do now…except that maybe I’d write a children’s’ book, learn Spanish and make more fancy hats.
