House fire visible from afar

A nighttime fire that consumed a large home under construction in the Stratton Forest Heights development (on a hillside south of the Westside) was visible to much of Colorado Springs starting around 6:15 p.m. Nov. 6.

In a photo shot from 21st Street up the hill north of Rio Grande Street, fire envelopes a 10,000-square-foot home Nov. 6 that had been under construction in a development called Stratton Forest Heights.

“The house [at 2855 Stratton Forest Heights] was a total loss,” a Fire Department press release states. “Fire units set up to protect the surrounding structures.”
The cause of the fire was under investigation this week.
The structure was about 10,000 square feet in size.
       There were no injuries.
People from 24 nearby residences were evacuated until 10 p.m.
Equipment included 10 engines, 3 truck companies, 3 brush trucks, 2 wild land units, 1 heavy rescue unit, 1 hazardous materials team, a rehab unit, a county wildland team and 1 air truck.
The Fire Department estimated that the fire “could be seen as far away as Powers and Research on the north end and Jetwing and Academy on the south side,” the release states.
