OWN Spirit Awards presentation Nov. 16
Honoring new or upgraded homes and businesses in the older Westside, the second annual Spirit Awards will take up the first half of the two-hour Organization of
Westside Neighbors (OWN) meeting Thursday, Nov. 16.
The meeting, free and open to the public, will be at the West Intergenera-tional Center, 25 N. 20th St., starting at 7 p.m.
OWN, the city-recognized advocacy group for the older Westside, has been taking nominations for the awards over the past several weeks. Certificates will go to those responsible for the improvements.
County Commissioner Sallie Clark, a former OWN president who started the Spirit Awards last year, said the number of nominations is down from last year's 27, but “still there are some really nice projects that people have submitted.”
Categories with entries are New Construction (business and residence), Remodel/Addition (residence), Curb Appeal & Landscaping (residence) and Historic Preservation (business and residence).
The awards are intended to encourage Westsiders who are taking care of their properties, according to Clark.
