What do you do?
Jill Gaebler

Where do you work and what is your title?
I work at Greccio Housing, a local nonprofit organization that provides affordable rental housing for low-income community members. I am the development director.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I raise funds for Greccio, through donations, grant requests and events. I also handle all marketing, advertising and communications.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I became a fundraiser in 2005, when I helped to found Colorado Springs Charter Academy. I’ve worked at Greccio Housing since 2007.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I love seeing all of the people we help become stable in their homes and lives. We provide services for more than 550 residents, helping them find better jobs, complete education goals and learn to balance their budgets.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
The demand for affordable housing is so high right now, and everyday we turn people away because all our properties are full. If I could change one thing, it would be to add 200 to 300 apartment units to our current rental inventory. And we’re working on that!
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
No training or education can prepare you for the day a family walks in your office, so desperately needing a home after living on the street or in their car. Greccio does its best to help everyone, but we can only help a small number of those needing shelter.
What makes working on the Westside special?
Westsiders are unique and make coming to work fun and interesting. The neighborhood is eclectic – displaying individual personalities while also giving a sense of community and protectiveness. I love the Westside!

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
