Westside schools:
2 Holmes teachers fly weightless

Holmes Middle School seventh-grade teachers Peggy Layh and Jennifer Mitchell participated in a jet flight Oct. 20 over Colorado Springs that deliberately caused repeated periods of weightlessness.
Along with about 50 other educators (including Ranganath Weiner of West) who were invited as part of the Northrop Grumman Foundation Weightless Flights of Discovery program, the teachers used these periods to conduct experiments that included the element of zero gravity.
“They will extend their experience to the classroom and have their students participate in an interdisciplinary math and science unit, which will be documented by the Boulder Space Center,” according to the District 11 Communicator newsletter.

Buena Vista Elementary, 1620 W. Bijou St., will hold its fall carnival Friday, Nov. 2. Various games and booths will be in the gym from 5 to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the PTA. Tickets will be sold for the activities.

No recommendations on school changes came out of the Oct. 22 meeting of the citizen-led School Configuration Committee, according to District 11 administrator liaison Mike Poor.
The next meeting of the committee is scheduled Monday, Nov. 12, at 5:30 p.m. in the District 11 board room.
The group plans to submit a report this month, followed by public hearings.
