Meet a Westsider:
Janeen Bohannon

Profession/Occupation... My occupation right now is antique shop owner (Janeen's Shop at the Top of the Stairs in Old Colorado City), but my profession for nearly 40 years was training barrel racing horses for pro rodeo and competing in professional rodeos. I know I would still be doing something with horses, but had to quit because of too many back injuries and surgeries. Now I love buying and selling antiques.

What I like most about the Westside is...
My neighbors and shop owner neighbors are all so friendly and helpful to me, and I love my landladies, so it is like a big happy family on this 2400 block. I also like that I can walk to the post office, library, my bank, at least five restaurants real close and three parks I can walk my dog to.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... I am from Texas and I love to dance to Western music, so I wish the Westside had some big dance halls that would play live western music.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... I don’t like all the new Sci Fi movies and all the violence, so I watch TCM when they have good movies on. The last good one I watched was “The Great Caruso” with Mario Lanza. I love to hear him sing and when I was a kid, I watched all of his movies and I had all of his records. But I also recently watched “Giant” and “Gone With the Wind” for probably the fifth time each.

I'd like to discover... If I was able to discover anything, it would be a cure for cancer and also for bipolar and depression disorders. They all destroy so many people and their families.

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Most of the famous people I would like to meet are not here any longer, such as Western movie stars Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper and John Wayne. Then there are Burt Lancaster and Robert Redford, and I could go on.

The next time I travel, I’m going... If I was ever able to travel again, it would be to go and compete at the rodeos, but since I can’t, I guess I would like to take a couple of cruises, one to the Caribbean islands for sure and one that goes down the east coast.

My favorite childhood memory is... going to Padre Island with my family and camping down on the beach. While everybody fished, my sisters and I played in the ocean. We lived in Corpus Christi. My favorite high school memory is going to the youth rodeos every weekend of every summer and competing in barrel races, the queens contest, breakaway roping, ribbon-roping, goat-tying and pole-bending. And also getting to see all my rodeo friends. We were like one big family.

My favorite fall pastime is... to be outside working in the garden with plants or flowers of some kind. I am an outdoor person and Colorado’s fall weather is usually better than any other state I’ve been in.

Something good I’ve read is... I never have time to read a novel because if I tried after working all day, I would be asleep after the first page. I do read a lot of articles but I can stay awake easier if I watch a novel on TV or the History Channel. In other words, I’d rather watch it or live it instead of read it.

My pet peeve is... It takes so much money just to live and survive, and the cost of living just keeps going up that there is never enough left for doing the things you would just enjoy doing.

If I won the lottery I’d... definitely tour the world to see all the places I would love to see and then I would buy a log home in the mountains and a Spanish-style home in New Mexico or Arizona and, of course, a sports car. The rest I would donate to our injured vets and the homeless and tortured animals.
