What do you do?
Where do you work and what is your title?
I work at my family's business, which is a vacuum and sewing machine repair shop called A-ability Repair. I am currently the co-owner.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I do all the vacuum repairs and take care of the day-to-day business such as ordering parts and supplies, store upkeep, repairs, sales and bookkeeping.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I have been working at the store since I was 12 years old, which means I've been there for 16 years! Our store was located at Tejon and Arvada for almost 18 years. We moved to 420 S. Eighth St. about 11 years ago.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I like that I have the flexibility to go out and try new things, I have left A-ability to try a couple of different jobs, but I have always come back with a better appreciation for what I have here.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
I think with any small business you will have things you want to change, but what I've come to realize it's best to leave most things as they are. Very little has changed with our business over the years, and it seems to still be working!
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
I didn't go to school to learn how to repair vacuums. I started watching my dad work when I was young. I would go to work with him during the summer, and one day I just started doing the repairs!
What makes working on the Westside special?
I love the Westside, I was born and raised here, and now I am proud to work here! I love the variety of people you have on the Westside - always friendly and very loyal!
“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
