Meet a Westsider:
Karon Downing Burch
Profession/Occupation... Administrative assistant at the best school on the Westside – Washington Elementary.
What I like most about the Westside is... the small-town feeling that it has maintained. I grew up on the Westside and loved walking to Micci’s Market, the library, Duckwall’s, Cross’ Drugstore, and to Bancroft Park on Friday evenings in the summer to watch the weekly movie. Even though these things are gone, the ambiance still lingers and is almost tangible.
If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... to see the bandshell at Bancroft Park used more. I remember square dances, concerts, movies and plays in the park.
A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Second Hand Lions” and “Hidalgo.” What great stories! I love movies that reflect honor, courage and character, and end with a smile and maybe a tear.
The worst advice I’ve ever gotten was... “Girls don’t need to go to college.”
If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Robert Ballard, and talk about his deep-sea expeditions in the search for the Titanic, Bismark, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal, the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown and PT-109.
The next time I travel, I’m going to... climb in a motor home with my kids, my grandkids and my husband, go to Disney World and have a most excellent adventure.
My favorite childhood memory is... Mom, Dad and my pajama-clad brothers and sisters climbing in the Chevy station wagon on a Friday night with blankets and pillows to head to Dairy King for hamburgers and then to the 8th Street or SkyVue Drive-In. This was the ONLY time we could play on a playground in our pajamas! The SkyVue’s playground was right in front of the screen. The music would start, the concession ads would light up the screen and scores of children would run to their cars. Oh for the days of the drive-ins.
My favorite summer pastime is... taking my granddaughters to the “Uncle Wilber’s Fountain” with a picnic lunch and then heading to Michelle’s for ice cream.
Something good I’ve read is.. all Clive Cussler’s novels; great adventures! I also love “Lonesome Dove” by Larry McMurtry.
My pet peeve is... having to jump through hoops to get anything worthwhile accomplished.
If I won the lottery, I’d... (See “Travel” above).
