Big pumpkins in Old Town Plaza Oct. 19
The scarecrows are back in Old Colorado City, and on Saturday, Oct. 19, the giant pumpkins will be too.
As the key event in Scarecrow Days - sponsored by the Old Colorado City Associates (OCCA) business group through this month - the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off will be Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Old Town Plaza.
Although advance signups are not required, growers from around the state have arrived with as many as 30 pumpkins - some tipping the scales at more than 1,000 pounds - in annual weigh-offs since Old Colorado City became an official Giant Pumpkin weighing location in 2005.
According to event planner Pam Gressett, the event is the second biggest of its kind in the state.
Cash prizes go to the winners.
The event is free and open to the public.
Elsewhere in Old Colorado City Oct. 19 will be sidewalk sales, Jason Bennett performing at Bon Ton's Café and William Walbaum at the Garman Museum and Gallery.
As for the scarecrows, some are provided by the OCCA, and others are handmade by merchants, using straw and personal imagination. Citizens can vote for their favorites, with the winner to be announced Nov. 1.
