Old Town Plaza puts on Scarecrow events of its own

While the Old Colorado City Associates (OCCA) merchants group was organizing displays and events for the historic district's annual Scarecrow Days this fall, the nine Old Town Plaza stores put together activities of their own for the first time. Kids use plenty of straw for the Old Town Plaza merchantsí scarecrow-making contest Saturday, Sept. 27.

Over the past two Saturdays, the public has been invited to the center at 25th Street and Colorado Avenue for scarecrow-making and pumpkin-decorating contests. The latter activity, along with a Plaza merchants bake sale, also helped support the OCCA's simultaneous Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off in the Plaza Oct. 4.
"Everything turned out real well," said Cindy Herndon, owner of Rocky Mountain Styles, one of the participating stores. "We'll definitely do both events again next year."
She said the shop owners decided on the activities mainly for promotional reasons. "People can know we're kid-friendly, and we're here to help anybody out," Herndon said.
