Spirit Awards offer recognition chance for Westside renovators
Have you fixed up your Westside home or business in the last year? Do you know someone who has?
The Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN) is once again offering a chance for such enterprising souls to be recognized, in the third annual Spirit Awards.
OWN, the city-recognized advocacy group for the older Westside, has set a deadline of Wednesday, Oct. 10 for this year's nominations. The awards night will be Thursday, Nov. 8 at the West Intergenerational Center's community room.
“A lot of time people do work on their homes but it goes unrecognized,” said Sallie Clark, a Westside businesswoman and county commissioner who initiated the awards in 2005. “The purpose of the Spirit Awards is to encourage Westside residents to renovate by giving recognition to those who do.”
Judging will be by a group of local residents. If one of the judges has a property that has been nominated in a Spirit Awards category, that person will not be allowed to judge that category, the OWN board also decided at last week's meeting.
The categories are:
Historic Preservation, New Construc-tion, Exterior Remodel/ Addition, Curb Appeal/ Landscaping and (businesses only) Signage.
Spirit Award nominations may be e-mailed to email@example.com or mailed to OWN, P. O. Box 6651, Colorado Springs, CO 80934-6651.
