Community planting Oct. 2 at West Middle

If you ever thought West Middle School's landscaping could use a little sprucing up, here's your chance to help.
In the first activity by the school's newly formed Community Liaison Committee, citizens are being asked to bring trees, shrubs or flowers and join school staffers, students and parents in a volunteer planting day this Saturday, Oct. 2, at the school.
The activity will start at 9 a.m. and go till about noon. Pizza will be served for lunch. West is at 1920 W. Pikes Peak Ave.
The focus will be on the school's front (Pikes Peak Avenue) and side yard on 19th Street, according to committee spokesperson Charlene Kleve.
“Any plants that anybody has to donate we will make work,” said Kleve, a language arts teacher who started teaching at West this year.
Depending on how many people and plants there are, greenery may also be added in the back of the school building by the gazebo, she said.
The committee consists of the school's support staff teachers and administration. Kleve said the group is seeking ways to tie the community closer to the school. Future activities, such as monthly barbecues, are under consideration. She also hopes to work with existing community-oriented entities, including the West Intergenerational Center and the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN).
