Giant pumpkins return to OCC Oct. 3

For the fifth straight year, the Old Colorado City Associates (OCCA) merchants group will host a Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off Saturday, Oct. 3.
The free event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Old Town Plaza at 25th Street and West Colorado Avenue.
OCCA President Charles Irwin said he did not know if the wetter summer would mean larger pumpkins this year, but last year's winner of 1,111 pounds just missed the state record of 1,135.
The event is one of only two weighing sites in Colorado under the auspices of the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth, a national organization that promotes growing the large vegetables. The other Colorado site is in Littleton Sept. 26, according to the Commonwealth website.
Along with determining the heaviest pumpkin in Old Colorado City, there will be a judging of the “prettiest pumpkin,” according to an OCCA press release.
During the event, the winner of the People's Choice Award for the scarecrows in Old Colorado City will also be announced, the OCCA release adds.
