Double goal for Howbert's Oct. 1 Walk-A-Thon: school fitness and funds

An on-campus “Walk-A-Thon” to raise money for Howbert Elementary classrooms and students is being organized by the school's PTA for Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
The first-time event will also emphasize the school's desire to “help kids learn more about being physically active,” according to a PTA press release. Its headline states that the event will “tackle childhood obesity and the need for school funds.”
A District 11 public school, Howbert is in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood at 1023 31st St.
“All Howbert Elementary students, teachers, staff as well as interested parents and community members [about 330 in all] will walk continuously around the school grounds” during the Walk-A-Thon's 45 minutes, the release continues. “A rainbow of color-coordinated shirts, banners and an abundance of kid enthusiasm will make for a picturesque community event.”
The release elaborates on the exercise aspects: “Research shows that the health and activity level of young people is strongly linked to their academic success and a lifetime of healthy choices.”
The school is seeking donations for the walk. For more information, contact Laura Tefertiller of the PTA at 219-0732 or teferL@yahoo.com.
