Meet a Westsider:
Lorrie Werner

Profession/Occupation... Former recreation center director with Denver Parks and Recreation. Now I enjoy working part-time at the Garden of the Gods Trading Post.

What I like most about the Westside is... My husband and I chose to live in this area because of the proximity to the Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, Bear Creek Park and even Mueller State Park, so we can hike, bike and jog in these wonderful places.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... to complete the bike path from America the Beautiful Park through Old Colorado City and all the way to Manitou.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... We saw the “Dark Knight,” but I wouldn't call it really “good.” Unfortunately there just aren't many of the “Forrest Gump” type movies made anymore!

The worst advice I’ve ever gotten was... As I was jogging past a house, the pet owner yelled from the porch: “Oh, don't worry about Fido, he won't hurt you.”

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Someone from the past would be Jesus – just give me an hour to talk about His love for everyone. Someone from the present would be Chris Evert – just give me an hour on the court to attempt to win one point from her!

The next time I travel, I’m going to... We are headed for San Francisco to visit our son and friends. In the past, we have enjoyed heading out of San Fran, either west to the ocean, or east to Yosemite, so this time I think we'll discover more of the City (and look for all of those lost hearts).

My favorite childhood memory is... I have lots of fond memories with our family, but I guess one that runs in my mind is when I was about 10 years old and I was riding my horse with a couple of friends who were also on their horses. We decided to cross the river that flowed through the pasture near my little hometown in Nebraska. We didn't know the river was so deep and all of a sudden, the horses started swimming! After we realized that we weren't going to “sink,” it was such a wonderful feeling to be riding these creatures as they swam to the other side.

My favorite summer pastime is... Hiking and mountain biking in the wonderful canyons and mountains near Manitou.

Something good I’ve read is.. “Pike's Peak Back Country,” by Celinda Reynolds Kaelin. It gives a lot of interesting history about the area.

My pet peeve is... People who ride their horses on the hiking trails in the Garden of the Gods and they don't pick up or at least spread the horse manure off the trail.

If I won the lottery, I’d... I'd first give a generous portion to my church, then I'd take my husband and son on a Mediterranean cruise, then I would take my entire family (Dad, brother, sister, and their families) to California to walk the beach, then, hoping there is money left, I would invite and pay for my top 25 Lifetime Friends from around the world to come to Colorado Springs and stay at the Broadmoor where we would hike, play tennis, pray, and eat!
