White Acres cleanup day Sept. 19
A volunteer cleanup day at White Acres will be Saturday, Sept. 19.
Don Ellis of the Friends of Red Rock Canyon said that signups will start at 7:30 a.m., with work going from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The main effort will be “mostly picking up some trash which was dumped years ago in the ravine in the northeast part of White Acres,” Ellis said. “If there are enough volunteers, we may also be picking up roadside trash along the east side of White Acres and loading up the old tires from the play area.”
City Parks will “provide trash bags, a dumpster to receive the trash, and a truck to haul off the tires,” Ellis said.
Located just south of Red Rock Canyon off 26th Street and Gold Camp Road, White Acres is a roughly 50-acre area that recently became the city's newest open space.
The Friends group also has been spearheading a fundraising drive to contribute $75,000 toward the initial $100,000 city payment on the $1 million property. After raising $25,000 of that, a challenge grant offered last month to match the next $25,000. Asked how that was going, Ellis said the group has raised about $13,000 toward the challenge. “It's going better than we expected,” he said.
To sign up for the White Acres workday, call the city at 385-6520 or go to the Friends website: redrockcanyonopenspace.org.
