Sept.-Nov. work dates on Garden trails

The Rocky Mountain Field Institute (RMFI) has scheduled 16 weekend workdays in the Garden of the Gods, starting Sept. 17 and continuing through mid-November.
Volunteers are needed, but should make reservations in advance. Times are 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., except for two designated half-day “youth days.”
Focus areas will be the Central Garden and/or the Upper Loop Trail. Work in the former will involve rebuilding some damaged trails, closing poorly located social trails and designating and improving climbing access trails. On the Upper Loop Trail, crews will be building retaining walls and accomplishing other “technical trailwork,” led by “timber construction trail guru Bruce Morrow,” a press release states.
People wanting to be volunteer Garden “greeters” are also welcome. They will man a table in the Garden to explain RMFI's work as well as to answer questions about the ecology, geology and history of the park.
       Scheduled workdays for the Central Garden will be Sept. 17 and 18; Oct. 2, 22, 23, 29 and 30; and November 5, 6, 12 and 13.
Scheduled workdays for the Upper Loop Trail will be Oct. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16.
Sixteen is the minimum age - 13 if accompanied by an adult. The two half-day “youth days” - geared for middle and high school students, though parents are welcome - will be Oct. 2 (12:30 to 4 p.m.) and 29 (9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.).
RMFI, a non-profit organization, has been working in the Garden for about 10 years, by agreement with City Parks. For more information, call 471-7736 or email
