RMFI resumes Garden of Gods drainage work

Volunteer workdays to fix drainage problems in the Garden of the Gods are scheduled on several weekends Sept. 16 through Dec. 10 by the Rocky Mountain Field Institute (RMFI).
The main focus will be the Spring Canyon area, which has suffered from erosion problems, some of them caused by people using social trails instead of marked trails. Work will include building small check dams to slow the flow of storm water and trap sediment. This involves excavating small keyways, lining with erosion control matting, filling with rocks, covering with soil and seeding with native grasses.
Several of the workdays are exclusively for middle and high school students. “They will not need a parent to accompany them on these days,” an RMFI press release reads. “All other days have a minimum age of 16, but a parent volunteer may bring a child of at least 13 years old.”
       The workdays (middle/ high school days in asterisks) are Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 16, 17*, 23 and 24; Oct. 7, 8, 21*, 22, 28 and 29; Nov. 4, 5, 11, 12*, 18 and 19; Dec. 2, 3, 9* and 10. Scheduled work times are 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Pre-registration is requested. For more information, call 471-7736 or e-mail rmfibox@qwest.net.
