OCCHS hosts speakers Sept. 12 and 13
The Old Colorado City Historical Society (OCCHS) will present speakers on consecutive days Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13.
First up will be local historian Dave Hughes, talking about the 1862 Civil War Battle of Glorieta Pass Sept. 12 at 11 a.m., while Colorado College history professor Doug Monroy will discuss his recently published book on Mexican immigration Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. The location in both cases will be the non-profit OCCHS' Old Colorado City History Center, 1 S. 24th St.
Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
Hughes previously spoke on the 1862 battle in New Mexico - in which a company from Colorado City helped the North prevail - at a History Center presentation in 2005. However, he has since found new information that provides “a bigger picture than just the battle,” he said.
The title of Monroy's book is “The Borders Within: Encounters with Mexico and America.” According to an OCCHS press release, the book focuses on “how Mexican immigration is changing our understanding of 'place' - and popular perception of western U.S. history.”
