‘Hike the Habitat’ event Sept. 18 will let hikers experience reclaimed quarry scar

       With Castle Concrete's recent donation of the former “Scar on the Mountain” to the U.S. Forest Service, the annual hike to the former quarry site north of Garden of the Gods has a new name this year.
       For eight years, it was called the “Scale the Scar Hike.” The hike Saturday, Sept. 18 is titled “Hike the Habitat,” according to Wanda Reaves, Colorado Mountain Reclamation Foundation (CMRF) project manager.
       The hike will begin at 8 a.m. Advance registration (deadline Sept. 16) is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. On- site registration will be $17.50 for adults and $12 for children. Checks may be made payable to CMRF and mailed to P.O. Box 6327, Colorado Springs, CO 80934.

       All proceeds will help the CMRF to revegetate other area quarries - Pikeview above Mountain Shadows and Snyder near Manitou Springs.
       The distance to the quarry is 2.5 miles up a moderately inclined road Breakfast will be provided, as well as music by bagpipers and the Pikes Peak Flute Society.
