OWN Spirit Award entry deadline Sept. 3

The deadline for Spirit Award entries - about two months earlier than in past years - is coming up Thursday, Sept. 3.
The fifth annual recognition/prize presentation for property improvements on the older Westside is sponsored by the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN).
If you have done a project, or would like to nominate someone who has, Spirit Award entry forms are available on the OWN website at westsideneighbors.org, by e- mail at info@westsideneighbors.org, or by mail at P.O. Box 6651, Colorado Springs CO 80934-6651.
Forms submitted by e-mail should be in .doc or .txt format with .jpg photos, according to OWN board member Bunny Blaha, who is the event's lead organizer.
Gold, silver and bronze winners in commercial and residential categories will be announced during OWN's membership meeting Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at the West Center, 1628 W. Bijou St. As was the case last year, the honorees will also receive prizes donated by local businesses.
Blaha noted that additional prize donors are welcome; they will be recognized in OWN's quarterly newsletter, the Westside Story. Businesses wishing to donate prizes are encouraged to contact Blaha at 471-8527 or bunny_blaha@msn.com.
OWN is the city-recognized advocacy group for the older-Westside area bounded by I-25 on the east; Lower Gold Camp Road on the south; city limits with Manitou Springs on the west (except for Pleasant Valley); and Uintah, 19th and King streets on the north.
The Spirit Award categories are Historic Preser-vation, Exterior Remodel/ Addition, New Construc-tion, Landscaping/Curb Appeal (residential and business/institutional in each category) and Signage (businesses only).
Previously scheduled in October or November, the Spirit Awards was moved up this year so that people could take pictures of their properties when they are “looking their best,” Blaha explained.
