Added trail workdays in September for flood damage in Red Rock Canyon
Already scheduled by the Rocky Mountain Field Institute (RMFI) were seven dates in July and (upcoming) Thursday, Aug. 27, Friday, Aug. 28 and Sunday, Aug. 30. That work involves trail improvements going through the old Quarry area.
The new dates are Wednesday, Sept. 16, Wednesday, Sept. 23 and Friday, Sept. 25. According to Molly Mazel of RMFI, crews will be taking on “erosion control and slope restoration at the Sand Canyon pond breach site.”
The time for all workdays are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The minimum age is 16. Pre-registration is required.
The roughly 1,500-acre city-owned open space was closed for about six weeks between May and July this year because of heavy spring rains.
RMFI is a nonprofit outdoor organization, headquartered on the Westside.
Asked how the July workdays went, Mazel said that nearly 100 volunteers "contributed more than 400 collective hours to projects led by RMFI, the Friends of Red Rock Canyon and the Manitou Trail CATS. Projects included trail improvements to the Round Up, Quarry Pass and Sand Canyon trails, as well as creek-channel stabilization and drainage of a pond of standing water within the Quarry."
