Westside schools:
AcademyACL starts a day earlier

Getting a jump on the school year was the new Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning (AcademyACL).
Located in the former Pike Elementary building, the K-8 school opened Aug. 17, the day before other Westside District 11 schools.
Geared for gifted learners but open to any students, AcademyACL went into the school year with waiting lists for all classes except full-day kindergarten. The enrollment is just under 160 students.
According to academy Director Nikki Myers, the school's one-day-earlier start date is related to its overall schedule. “We have more calendar days than the district does, more staff development, and more family conferences,” she said. “It's mostly aligned with D-11 except for additional time in some places.”
For more information, go to the school's website at www.academyacl.org or call 434-6566.
       Math teacher honored
West Middle School math teacher Philip Hutcherson was recently honored with Math Hero award by the Raytheon Company.
The award includes $2,500 to the teacher and a like amount to West.
Hutcherson, who offers a weekly math club in addition to classes, has led West math students to honors in different math competitions over the past three years.
The award was given to 31 teachers in all across the United States through Raytheon's MathMovesU initiative to engage middle school students in that discipline.
