4,200 Westside students go back to school Aug. 18

Students will return to classes in District 11 Monday, Aug. 18. Westside schools with new principals are Buena Vista (David Brilliant) and Midland (Robyn Colbert) elementaries, while Rob Utter has been made the permanent principal at Holmes after serving in an acting capacity last year (see story and photo, Page 3).
Based on the official enrollment “counts” last October, more than 4,200 students will be attending eight elementaries, two middle schools, one high school and one alternative high school on the Westside in District 11.
Another Westside public high school, chartered by the state, is Colorado Springs Early Colleges, which is in its second year sharing space at Colorado Technical University (CTU), 4435 N. Chestnut St. Some 400 students are expected to attend this year (about twice its total a year ago), according to founder/ administrator Keith King,
The Westside's District 11 schools all follow the district's general curriculum, but with certain educational focuses in some cases. Bristol Elementary puts an extra emphasis on art and music, Pike on reading. Buena Vista Elementary is transitioning to become all Montessori - currently that approach is offered at all grade levels, with traditional classes still available for grades 4 and 5. Midland Elementary is all-school International Baccalaureate. Whittier offers a class for gifted students (EAGLES), and West Middle School does too (SAIL). Holmes has pre-Advanced Placement classes, synchronized with those at Coronado High. Bijou Alternative is available by application for students who do not want to attend a traditional high school.
