What do you do?
James J. Maguire

Where do you work and what is your title?
The name of my business is Natural Wellness. I am a licensed acupuncturist and nationally certified Diplomate in acupuncture.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I help people get well. I specialize in acupuncture without needles and natural wellness programs; simple, gentle, effective treatments for all types of health concerns.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I have been doing this work for 30 years. After witnessing my daughter’s miraculous recovery from bronchitis through traditional Chinese medicine, I became one of the first licensed acupuncturists in the United States. I moved to the Westside in July 2007 and opened my office in October 2007.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
It works! After doing this work for so long, I still get excited at seeing it work. and it works almost every time for people who are ready to be well! It’s a good feeling to be able to help others overcome health concerns they thought they would have to live with.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
People’s understanding of what it is that I do. Our bodies naturally have a tremendous ability to heal and function normally. Many health problems we see today are common and not normal. Often, the body simply needs a bit of support for its natural healing process.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
It’s sometimes challenging to get people to accept my treatments to help them get better. I have had to learn how to encourage people to try something different. If they do, they might get better....much better.
What makes working on the Westside special?
Belonging, the mountains, the historical value of the area. I came to Old Colorado City embracing its sense of community. I believe in this area’s potential to prosper economically while maintianing its historic charm and natural beauty.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
