BBQ to benefit Bear Creek Nature Center Aug. 15The Happy Trails Barbecue, a benefit for the Bear Creek Nature Center, will be Friday, Aug. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m.
The event will be at the center, 245 Bear Creek Road.
Featured will be live music, a catered barbecue, desserts and beverages (including wine and beer),
Admission is $40 a person ($70 for a couple).
Because of limited space, advance reservations are suggested.
Bear Creek can be reached at 520-6387. The Happy Trails website is: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ happy-trails-barbecue-for-bear-creek-and-fountain-creek-nature-centers-tickets-12153807365.
The center is owned by El Paso County Parks. Based on the website and Westside Pioneer news archives, the Parks budget is less than half what it was more than five years ago, and this has also meant funding cuts to the Nature Center during a time when the county population has been increasing.
Currently, County Parks “only receives $1.50 per year from the average taxpayer,” the website states. “This has resulted in reduced services to our youth.”
The Bear Creek Nature Center, like the county's center in Fountain, is coordinated by paid staff with volunteer docents, providing exhibits at no charge and various programs for a fee, with the goal of informing people about the natural environment.
