Water-line replacement to start Aug. 9 at Broadway/21st

Reacting to frequent water-main breaks in that area, Colorado Springs Utilities plans a replacement project at 21st and Broadway streets starting Tuesday, Aug. 9.
Temporary lane reductions may occur, but no street closures are expected, according to Kristin Flannery, issues manager for Colorado Springs Utilities.
The expected completion date is Aug. 19.
The city enterprise is notifying nearby businesses, which may experience “daily outages” during the project. If need be, temporary water service will be supplied, but no outages will occur over weekends, she said.
The work schedule will be Tuesday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The main replacement will take place 50 feet north and 50 feet south of Broadway Street in 21st Street in addition to some work in Broadway Street. Utilities crews will be replacing aging ductile iron pipe with a combination of 8-inch PVC and 20-inch HDPE piping, Flannery said.
ALSO UPCOMING: Another water-main replacement project is expected to last longer (till Sept. 8), but have less impact on motorists, according to Flannery. Starting Sunday, Aug. 7, it will be in the area of Fillmore Ridge Heights, a dead-end street for several businesses just north of Fillmore Street.
“This is the follow-on to the project in March that extended a new water main into Fillmore Street,” she said.
That project required a weekend closure of Fillmore in both directions.
Crews will be working at night (Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.) “to minimize traffic and water service disruptions to the businesses along Fillmore Ridge Heights,” she said.
The new main will replace an aging line that has had frequent breaks, Flannery added.
