Meet a Westsider:
Chris Baum

Profession/Occupation... Retired. Previously I was in the Navy, and after that, living in New Mexico, I owned a business and worked on computers.

What I like most about the Westside is... the convenience and variety. We are close to downtown, close to parks, close to Manitou and the mountains and right in with historical Old Colorado City and the basic occupations of civilization: a meat packing plant, a power plant, railroads, a newspaper, candy makers, a juvenile detention center, galleries. What could be more interesting?

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... to improve the streets. Rundown and undulating pavement not only looks bad but makes getting around less fun. We let our major roads get really bad before we repave them – witness Eighth Street.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Too Big to Fail,” about the financial meltdown in 2007. Very thought provoking and with a star-studded cast.

I'd like to discover... a way to easily and cheaply see what's underground. You could locate pipes, wires, tree roots, anything that needed to be worked on, and lots of other stuff. Maybe even Jimmy Hoffa!

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Jesus Christ. No one else has changed the world and me the way He has.

The next time I travel, I’m going... Alaska. I've never seen it; it sounds rugged and unspoiled, and I imagine the people are rugged and unspoiled too. But let’s be honest, the next time I travel will probably be to Canon City or Calhan or some other exotic place.

My favorite childhood memory is... vacationing on the Chesapeake Bay. There was always something both stimulating and relaxing about getting back to nature and being on the water.

My favorite summer pastime is... sailing. We go to Prospect Lake in Memorial Park only 10 minutes away, or for more adventure, hit the Aurora or Pueblo reservoirs. It's usually quiet and invigorating, but can be terrifying if the wind comes up.

Something good I’ve read is... obviously the Westside Pioneer! Something longer, though, is “How The Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe.” This non-fiction historical work really opened my eyes as to the influence of the Irish on our heritage, something I didn't learn in school.

My pet peeve is... people who think they know best how we should live our lives and want us to pay for the imposition of their values. Witness the war on drugs; the upheaval caused by government granting married people special rights which has resulted in unmarried people wanting those rights; unconstitutional rules on gun ownership; import restrictions; bans on drilling; the list goes on.

If I won the lottery I’d... Since I don't work now, I do what I like, which is to volunteer, putter around the house, sail, ski and complain to anyone who will listen, which is mainly my dogs.
