Meet a Westsider:
Cynthia Darrigan

Profession/Occupation... I’ve been retired for quite some time now. My profession was teaching high-school English in New York, North Carolina and Puerto Rico.

What I like most about the Westside is... It’s almost impossible to decide what I like most. I enjoy living close to the Front Range and Garden of the Gods, being a part of Old Colorado City and visiting the merchants along West Colorado Avenue. I could go on and on.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... to stop the retail shops on West Colorado from moving (Handcrafted Santas & More) or closing (Willow Creek by Heritage Design).

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Mother and Child,” with Annette Benning and Naomi Watts. If Hollywood made more movies like this one, viewers would learn to appreciate what it’s like to walk in someone else’s shoes.

I'd like to discover... a way to right the wrongs in our world.

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Howard Fast, who wrote historical fiction. A few of my favorites are “April Morning” (Revolutionary War) and “Freedom Road” (post-Civil War).

The next time I travel, I’m going to... Grand Lake, Colorado. I hear it’s very beautiful.

My favorite childhood memory is... My family spent every summer at our camp on Otisco Lake in central New York. We called Ostisco the “thumb” of the Finger Lakes because it was east of Skaneateles Lake. So many good memories – I could write a book!

My favorite summer pastime is... watching the birds choose the nest, located outside our front door, high up on a beam; then watching the new babies poke their heads out of the nest at feeding time. I see a new bird family move in every spring!

Something good I’ve read is... “Pearl Buck in China,” by Hilary Spurling.

My pet peeve is... people who belittle other people in public.

If I didn’t have to work for a year, I would... Since I’m retired, I’ve already done/am doing some of the things I’ve always wanted to do – namely, read my favorite authors’ works from cover to cover. (Favorite authors: Mark Twain, D. H. Lawrence. Favorite poets: William Wordsworth, William Blake.) Also, my husband and I take care of our two grandchildren four days a week. They are our treasures.
