Westside politickin': Merrifield says Republicans’ finance charges ‘desperate’

David Wardrop, Executive Director of the Colorado Republican Party, last week filed three requests with the Secretary of State's Office for investigations into alleged election law violations by Democratic State Rep. Michael Merrifield, whose District 18 includes the Westside.
The Republicans chiefly allege reporting discrepancies regarding two field locations used by Merrifield, one in Old Colorado City and the other in the Hillside neighborhood, saying he has shown a “callous disregard for voter-approved campaign-finance reform and the Colorado Constitution.”
Merrifield scoffed at the charges, saying the Republicans “are desperately seeking an issue to attack me with.” He said his opponents misunderstand that his accounting reflects the differing uses of those locations - unstaffed in the case of Hillside and shared at times with the Democratic Party in the case of Old Colorado City.
He added that he is “proud to have the only outreach offices of any legislators in the state, in an effort to make myself available to constituents.”
Some voting info, leading up to the Aug. 10 primary...
Early voting: Those interested in voting early can do so from Monday, August 2 through Friday, August 6. The nearest location to the Westside is downtown at 200 South Cascade Avenue (8 a.m.-5 p.m.)
Absentee Voting: If you have ordered an absentee ballot, you can return your ballot to the El Paso County Clerk's office until the day of the election. If mailing, do so no later than Aug. 6 to ensure delivery by election day.
Unaffiliated voters: Registered voters who have not chosen a party can affiliate up to and including election day. This will allow voting in either the Republican or Democrat primary. Only affiliated voters can vote in the primary election Aug. 10.
If you registered to vote after January 2003 and have not voted in an election, you will be required to produce ID at the polling place for verification purposes.
