Meet a Westsider:
Janet Durkin

Profession/Occupation... Administrative assistant at the Center on Fathering.

What I like most about the Westside is... that it’s not one big housing development!

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... that the police would sweep the druggies and homeless out of the alley behind my house. They are living in the ravine and tunnel under the street and using my trees for a toilet. I no longer go into the alley for any reason.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Despicable Me 2” and “The Heat.” Loved them both.

I'd like to discover... A cure for procrastination. I’ll have to think about it for a while before I decide on a definitive answer, though. Soon. Soon. Don’t push me.

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Fame doesn’t impress me; character and kindness do.

The next time I travel, I’m going... Oregon. I loooooove Oregon. Especially the Columbia River, the forests and the beaches on Oregon’s west coast.

My favorite childhood memory is... Learning to ride a horse. I was 7 or 8. Back then, no saddle, no helmets, no riding ring. Just get on a horse and ride anywhere. I fell off a lot, but I learned how to ride. I thought being allowed to shovel horse manure was a great kindness on the part of the guy who owned the horses. Ah. The dreams of a little girl!

My favorite summer pastime is... I like to hop in the car and drive somewhere on an adventure because I always want to know what’s over the next hill, and I like to paint and draw.

Something good I’ve read is... Listen here. I’m in the middle of sorting out my library for my upcoming yard sale. I am sitting amid hundreds of books. There’s no way I could pick just one. Oh, look, here’s one of my favorites. Dorothy Sayers’ “The Nine Tailors.” And I will admit to one tiny teeny guilty pleasure. I read romance novels. I don’t know why; they’re awful, but they’re addictive.

My pet peeve is... mean people. Such a waste of energy.

If I won the lottery I’d... Wow! What a great idea. I’d go to Oregon and paint and draw. Wow. For a whole year. Bliss.
