In memoriam: Jim Hye
World War II veteran and long-time Westsider James Edward (Jim) Hye, 88, passed away June 30 after a long illness.
Services will be Friday, July 19 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Ave.
Mr. Hye was born and raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He enlisted in the Army in August 1942 after graduating from high school. With the 1261st Engineer Combat Battalion, he served in England, Belgium, France and Germany.
Mr. Hye married his wife Betty Lou in 1951. She survives him, along with three sons, Robert, Richard and Steven; and seven grandchildren.
Also in 1951, Mr. Hye earned a civil engineering degree from the South Dakota School of Mines. He worked in the engineering and construction fields, including work at NORAD, Air Force Academy and Fort Carson after moving his family to this area in 1963.
While his sons were young, he was active in the Boy Scouts and coached softball. He was a former member of the Garden of the Gods Rotary Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Wounded Warriors or the charity of choice.
