Big Bear Day at Bear Creek
The Bear Creek Nature Center will have its annual Big Bear Day Thursday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Geared for elementary-age children and their families, the center will offer a range of bear-related indoor and outdoor activities, including chances to meet Berry, the Bear Creek Bear. The fee is $3. Pre-registration is not necessary except for groups of 10 or more.
Along with having fun, Todd Marts of the Nature Center said he hopes that visitors to the event will learn a little more about coexisting with bears. “There's a balance here,” he said. “We have the bear suit and bear crafts, and they're cute and cuddly, and that's all OK, as long as we realize real bears aren't that way, and when we a see bear we know what to do.”
What should people do if they see a bear?
Figure out the best way to avoid getting in its way,” Marts said. This can mean backing slowly away. “You want to let the bear know you're not afraid but you're going to leave it alone,” he added. “Nine out of 10 bears are going to run, but if not, make yourself as big as you can. And if there are two of you, stand together.”
The center is at 245 Bear Creek Road. For more information, call 520-6387.
